Inequalities in the pension system mean that
millions of people are missing out when they retire.

The Gender Pensions Gap Report

There are currently around 3 million women in the UK that are locked out of workplace pension saving, and even those that can save are reaching retirement with a pension pot £136,800 less than men on average.

In our latest Gender Pensions Gap report, we explore what’s creating the gap and what women can do right now to secure their financial futures.

Closing the gap

Workplace pension

3 million women are missing out on workplace pensions as they don’t meet the criteria for auto enrolment into a workplace pension.

Family carer top-up

Introducing a ‘family carer’ top-up would help about 3 million women and 300,000 men top up their pension savings after taking time out to care for children and elderly relatives.

Multiple part time jobs

Including income from additional jobs would push an additional 80,000 people over the £10,000 threshold for auto enrolment – 60,000 of whom would be women.

Automatic enrolment

We are calling on the government to remove the £10,000 threshold per annum for auto enrolment and start enrolment from the first pound of income.

Pension sharing

Just 12% of divorces result in any pension division. Ensuring that pension funds are taken into account by default in divorce settlements will help address pension inequality.
